What the UK dependant visa change actually means for your application
The January 2024 rule change did not ban dependants outright. It drew a line between taught and research degrees, and that line is the whole story.
In January 2024, the UK Home Office changed the rules on student dependant visas. The headline coverage made it sound like a blanket ban. It was not. The actual change drew a specific line: students on taught programmes, Bachelor’s degrees and Master’s by coursework, can no longer bring dependants. Students on postgraduate research programmes, PhD, MPhil, or MRes, retain the right to do so.
That distinction changes the calculation for any applicant with a family. It is no longer only a question of which programme offers the best career outcome. It is a question of which programme keeps your family in the same country as you. For many applicants, that reframes a Master’s by coursework as the wrong route entirely, in favour of a research track programme that would previously have looked like the more demanding option.
The practical consequence is that a research proposal now carries weight it did not carry before. Admission onto a research degree requires a proposal that a supervisor and a review panel will approve, not just a completed application form. That is the gap most applicants underestimate.
